SYNAPSE PRESENTS: MICROBIOTA – A JOURNEY THROUGH THE MICROBIAL WORLD
Synapse presents Roberto Kolter, past president of the American Society for Microbiology and Professor Emeritus of microbiology at Harvard Medical School. He has been the Co-director of Harvard’s university-wide Microbial Sciences Initiative since 2003. In 2016, Kolter became co-blogger (with Moselio Schaechter) of the popular microbiology blog, Small Things Considered.
The science in Roberto’s lab has spanned a range of topics: biofilm physiology, interspecies interactions, small molecule natural products, and microbial ecology and evolution.
On the 14th of May Roberto Kolter will offer insights into the microbial world in his talk entitled “A Journey Through The Microbial World.” The journey will involve traveling briefly through the history of microbiology and exploring microbial communities in different environments, from our bodies and our homes to the world’s ocean’s. The talk will conclude with a discussion of directions that research may take to understand the mechanisms underlying microbial community function.
Roberto is an Otto Mønsted visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine. He is hosted by the Center of Excellence, Center for Microbial Secondary Metabolites (CeMiSt) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation
Following Roberto’s presentation, there will also be presentations by companies that research and utilise microbiota as part of their work.
One of these companies is Clinical Microbiomics. They are an independent contract research organisation fully dedicated to microbiome research. The scientists within the company have extensive microbiome research experience and are experts in the involvement of the microbiome in pre- and probiotic treatment and a vast array of clinical indications, including diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, skin disease, IBD and IBS.
